Mens fragrance and colognes has been around for long time throughout history. Mens cologne has gone through many changes in components and scents. It is still popular for men to wear cologne, and there are many on the market today.

During many eras in society, it was common for people to bathe infrequently. Fragrances were used to cover up the smell of being unwashed. In fact during the dark ages and the Middle Ages, it was considered bad to bathe. It was believed that bathing washed away the body’s natural defenses. Though during the Renaissance bathing became more frequent, men still wore fragrances. As well drilling, indoor plumbing, and running hot water became common in more and more homes, bathing became more common still. Today men bathe about once a day. Mens fragrance went from a way to cover up body odor to a way to smell a certain way.
Mens colognes was developed in Cologne, Italy. The early colognes were made of water, oil, citrus fruit, and herbs such as lavendar. They evolved through the years as through ingredients were found in nature and through chemistry. While early colognes were scented oil and water mens fragrance have been made using alcohol as a base. The alcohol quickly evaporates leaving the scent on the skin.

Today, there are more varieties of mens cologne than ever.

These scents have been formulated to be very masculine. Most varieties of mens fragrance are musky or resinous. Some are herbal, or have citrus undertones. Floral and heavy fruit scents are not common, as they are considered too feminine. Many clothing designers have one or more mens cologne to accompany their line. Many of these are available at mid-level to high end department stores as well as boutiques. Less expensive non-designer mens cologne is available at drug stores.
Though there are many different colognes on the market, they are not all ideal for every man. Differences in body chemistry cause colognes to smell different on each man. Many department stores offer testers of some or all colognes that they offer. Most men find a fragrance they like and stay loyal to that particular one despite the changing trends.
